I Am a PC

You would think that as an artist I would lean towards Mac for my everyday usage, especially for drawing, web design, and other digital media creativity.  I definitely understand how it’s simple to use, “it just works”, interface is attractive to the Apple congregation.  The thought of just turning the computer on, having everything set up, no tweaks, no confusing settings adjustments, get the task done and get out, is a huge appeal to some.

I, however, love to tweak and fine tune things.  I am a bit of a control freak, and love to have say over as much as I can on the operations of my PC.  So, I am going a little against the grain when it comes to digital media creation, by not using a Mac.  In this area, I do not believe the PC to be inferior in any way.  I am not claiming that one platform is better than the other, a PC is definitely my preference.

If you like to tweak and tinker, you should try Linux. Probably Ubuntu would do the trick for you. It has all the tweak and tinkerability (yes, that’s a word now) that one could ever hope for and without all the crap you have to deal with when you use Windoze. Download the CD image, burn it to a CD, and boot up from it… you can try Ubuntu without ever even installing it to your hard drive…

I have actually tried to make the leap to Linux (using Ubuntu) on several occasions over the last few years, but at each attempt found myself at the same two hurdles: time and gaming. I find that as more time passes by, I seem to have less of it free. So, I haven’t been able to make the time to learn and understand the complexities of Linux. Then there’s gaming…the support by major gaming companies for Linux seems to be next to nothing. I did try and use Wine and CodeWeavers’ CrossOver, but found things to be a little too buggy to make the gaming experience enjoyable.
